Promoting Collaborative Problem-Solving with Communities: Trans disciplinary Approaches for Teaching and Research
“Academic research is not always relevant when it comes to helping solve challenges in the world of policy and practice. An emergent trend in research is a call to include societal actors in the process of defining research questions and working alongside researchers throughout the research process. This presentation will define the term “transdisciplinary research,” which is a term to describe research done collaboratively with community partners with the goal of improving policy and practice. Audience members will also be introduced to the Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities Network (EPIC- N), a network of universities around the world interested in connecting their classroom teaching to community-based problem solving. Participants will also walk through some exercises to understand how they are best situated to engage in transdisciplinary research and teaching and formulate a plan of action in their own fields”.
Creativity and Invention
Expectations are rapidly evolving in the chemistry community. New chemical processes are required to be both greener and economically competitive. These expectations can not be met by incremental improvement of old technologies. New technologies, based on new ideas, are better at producing dramatic improvements in environmental performance. This workshop will help participants develop their ability to come up with new ideas. Various strategies of ideation (idea creation) will be described and illustrated with exercises involving every member of the audience. This is a fun and very interactive presentation that gets students excited about contributing intellectually to their own projects.
